Sometimes it is nice when you have a ‘blind’ illness—and sometimes it isn’t. I have had lupus for 18 years. No-one can really tell by looking at me how bad I really can feel. Sometimes when I am ‘extremely’ fatigued and or in a lot of pain I will park in a handicapped parking spot (not often)—and yes I get the ‘looks’, nasty looks. Now this IS one time I wish instead of the dirty look that they would just come out and ask me IF I am sick and why I am parking there. I feel like wearing a sign (on these days) that says “yes” today I have a ‘right’ to park here. And, you are lucky that you don’t.
I have/need to shop and do other errands to keep my life as normal as I can, but I do need a little help sometimes trying to get as much done as I can without using up the little bit of energy that I have. I have to do ‘something’ everyday otherwise I feel like my day is incomplete. Therefore fatigued, in pain, sick or just feeling downright awful I still try and have normality in my life. It might just be one trip to the grocery store to pick up a few needed items, or it might be a visit to a friend’s for a short time, but I have to do this. I have to have somewhat of a normal life living with these obstacles.

I need to try your advice Sherri! I like it.
Tell me about it!
I love when I walk out of the handicap bathroom stall. Imagine seeing me, a 27 yr old who doesn’t look a day over 17 yrs, at best, looking healthy and normal as a horse. (er. i guess that wouldn’t really be to normal if i looked like a horse) but…you know…
The thing i can’t WAIT to do, is for someone to dare bitch at me for occupying that bathroom. I can’t wait to cock my head to the side, say “really?” and lift my shirt just enough to flash my 10 inch scar and bandaged up stoma. and then decide whether to finish it up with “when you have to stick a tube in your stomach to take a crap, a little space and privacy helps.”
rock on missy!
Great comment. I hope when or if I need to do the same, that I can come up with some thing to make them feel bad and make me smile.
Power to us all!

I was thinking of the handicapped stall and wanted to say that I have got dirty looks for using one too! I have only used them when there was no one around that needed it. I was once in a restroom and there were 2 ladies waiting ‘in line’ to use a stall. The handicapped one was empty and there was no one waiting to use it! HELLO! So I procedded to use it and did. OMG! The looks I got when I came out! I washed my hands and left. What is wrong with people??
