I guess it all began on my 5th birthday. After months of bruising, nosebleeds, ear infections, chest colds, obnoxiously high fevers, and muscle pains so severe that I was unable to walk, I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia). I went into remission a few months after treatment, and after a 3-year protocol I was pronounced a "full cure" at age 8. For 10 years I experienced absolutely no further symptoms, and just lived an extraordinarily normal & boring life without giving that stupid disease another thought. Then, I broke my arm. No big deal, right? Well, at my 10th annual follow-up checkup, I was told that - suprise! - I had localized osteosarcoma in my left radius (lower arm bone), and was in the early stages of AML (acute myelogenous leukemia). I underwent 1 year of chemo & radiation, as well as surgical removal of the osteogenic sarcoma & a bone graft (limb-salvage a complete success: my arm is still intact!). After going in and out of remission, I had a bone marrow transplant. 1 year later, I was pronounced in "full" remission, and discontinued all treatments the subsequent year. I had no further symptoms. 8 months ago I learned that my AML was no longer in remission. Here we go again :) - sarahrose

Mike's lymph nodes in his neck were swollen and doctors thought at first it was something else. But, after a couple of months, Mike knew something wasn't right. So, a surgeon removed one of the lymph nodes and came out of surgery and told me he was 99% sure Mike had some type of cancer. Later, it was discovered that he had cancerous lymph nodes not only in his neck but 2 other places on his body. The doctors at Vanderderbilt then determined it was AML. - deb

Probly the whole summer before my diagnosis i began to feel fatigued. sometimes id experience feeling like i had low blood sugar and would have to sit down suddenly because i felt so awful. as it progressed i just dragged and dragged. at the time i worked at taco bell and was told i was the best worker but by the time i quit i certainly had dropped out of that position. its not that i was lazy but i was just so exhausted and had to call off alot. finaly i just didnt feel good. it was a jewish holiday and i was supposed to go to the celebration that night but i stayed home instead. i called off work for two weeks and only got worse. it got so bad that i spent the entire day and night sleeping. i was barely eating or drinking. i remember once putting a grape in my mouth and falling asleep immediately after. LOl or the time my friend called me and i asked him to hold a sec. i blew my nose forgot he was on the phone and fell asleep. 20 min later i woke up and saw he was still on the phone. lol i finaly saw a dr and they told me i had strep throat. after taking anti biotics for 10 days and no change i went to the ER. i was dangerously dehydrated, anemic, and had huge lumps on my shins that was tender like a bruise and very feverish. Ill always remember that day cuz i went into that ER and never came back out. it felt like forever waiting on different test results. when the doctor finaly came in and told us i didnt really understand. in fact i didnt even know that leukemia was a cancer. treatments started so fast it all blacked out and i dont really remember any of it. but there was my symptoms. - bekalee

Anal Cancer Symptoms: -
In October of 2008, I started having fatigue symptoms and my legs were aching all the time, just to the outside of my shins. I felt full and had a lot of flatuence. My GP did bloodtests and discovered I was very low in the B6 vitamin. When questioned, he said that it was not a symptom (to his knowledge) of anything, although I did read it could have relavancy to cancer diagnosis later. I told him after taking supplements, that I still was not well and asked for a colonoscopy because I had had previous ones and they had removed polyps and told me I should have them once every 3 years, but then when I saw another doctor, she told me not to come back for 5 years, which would have been in 2009. He refused to let me have one. In March I saw the doctor again about irritation in my anal area and he said it was hemorroids. In April 2009, I did my own DRE and felt the lump was quite a bit bigger, then remembered what had happened the previous July. I went to the doctor, my own GP wasn't there, but I saw his colleague who told me it was most likely hemorroids and I insisted he set me up for a colonoscopy. When I called back a week later, they said they had not heard back from the specialist. I called the specialist's office who told me that they had not received the request. Fearful of the competancy of my GP's office, I went to a Walk In Clinic in a nearby town. The doctor was an older man, retired but volunteering his time at the clinic, he did a DRE, clearly told me I had a tumor and had me in to see a doctor in less than three days.... oh the difference between older humbled doctors and arrogant younger doctors who treat you like you are a hypocondriac! In the long run, I take responsibility for having not acted sooner on my own instincts, and I also feel the doctor who 'was' my GP at the time, needs to take responsibility for being so intent on keeping my records up to date and typing into the computer, that he didn't even listen to my symptoms... I recently was in the emerg for another reason and overheard a patient that was registering for care say "I do not want Dr "so and so", if I have to have him, I will leave and go to another hospital." Sometimes we are put in a place for a reason, if only to validate our experience with another.
Oh, I had Mitomycin and 5FU - just wondering why that is not listed under Chemotherapy? - irenesdream

-
I thought I had hemorrhoids, internal and external. Had pain and bleeding. Went to my GP back in Feb for a pap and asked her to take a look- She said that it looked sore and gave me a surgeons name and she did not indicate that she thought it could be something more serious. As I did not want to have hemorrhoid surgery, I put off seeing the surgeon until Nov as I could no longer stand the pain. As soon as he took a look he knew it was cancer.

I had pain in my hip during my second sons pregnancy, it never went away and by the time I had time to think about myself I was pregnant again. I lost this one 14 weeks in. My doctor the whole time was telling me my son caused my sacrum to turn he could feel it no x rays nessasary! I believed him until finally I wanted to die so bad. But my babies who would love then as much as I do! I made it to a different clinic begged and cried to a PA. Of course he said. I laid on the xray table when I heard him swear and call me in. Half my hip was gone. A tumor the size of a football took its place. The tumor was what my doctor was feeling not my sacrum. Thats when my whirl wind began. - robinbird

The mammogram did not show the lump, however, the ultrasound did. I was scheduled for a core biopsy 3 days later, and 2 days after that I had my diagnosis. - lottie

My history started with a routine mammogram March 3, 2010. Showing presence of abnormal calcifications. I underwent stereotactic biopsy of these calcifications showing presense of high-grade DCIS. Subsequently, I have undergone bilateral mastectomy with left breast being prophylactic on March 30, 2010 with immediate reconstruction. The pathology and the mastectomy showed at 1.5-mm, invasive, component, grade 3. Invasive carsinoma in the setting of DCIS. ER/PR+ at 90 and 90% respectively. HER-2/neu is 3+ I am BRCA1 and BRCA2 negative for this mutation. Removed 5 lymph nodes, they were all negative. - sweetsunflwr

My symptoms increased over a 6 mo. period I think. At first, from what I can recall, I started having bowel movements that were painful, including vomitting. I was tired all the time. As time progressed, my stools were pencil thin, and I would pass black blood clots at times. Near the diagnosis, my stools were watery daily, often bloody and painful with increasing vomitting. My stomach often felt like Pop Rocks were in it, just girgly feeling after I would eat, which led to loss of appetite.

I was tired all the time, but blamed it on being the mother of three small children and working 2nd shift. I stopped playing with my kids outside or even going outside with them. I'd let them play while I dozed in and out. I also had asthma-like symptoms for over a year and was actually diagnosed with asthma...or should I say "misdiagnosed" with asthma. I had shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing jags. I had pains in my neck, which I thought were kinks and suddenly one day when I started rubbing my neck on January 21, 2009 it felt like a huge bulge. That whole day I had a horrible feeling after that and finally called to make an appointment with my doctor. - sarahmarie

Sickly for several years, always feeling out of sorts, never wanting to do anything or go anywhere (a little rough on the social life); stomach problems, body aches, infections, fevers, headaches, seriously quick failing eyesight & night blindness (this happened during the six weeks of fever)...ALWAYS sick (ALWAYS whiney)...went through the wringer with many a (mis)diagnosis: influenza bugs, mercury poisoning, allergies, fibromyalgia, blood poisoning, diverticulitis, depression, ulcerative colitis, dysentery, psychosomatic disorders, osteopenia, hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, age, on and on...you start to wonder yourself...not that all diagnoses were incorrect but...missed A LOT of work, at one point a six-week stint with a constant high fever.
I was taking so many different antidepressants, antibiotics and other medications, I was beginning to wonder why I still felt so bad when I could barely feel at all...
My third general physician sent me for my annual chest x-ray as I was a smoker. A small spot was found on my right upper lung. Referred to a pulmonologist, a CT scan was performed revealing a 1.6cm nodule with stellate margins. A Pet scan was performed revealing several areas of concern in both lungs. The pulmonologist recommended surgery and referred me to a surgeon. - dawn

I discouverd an Enlarged node under my rt chin painless, Node removed, 2 positive reports for Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma. 1 neg. did ct scan and pet scan found node under arm and a few little one here and there, removed node from under arm neg for Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma 2009, do another scan others all disappear so no treatment they don't think I have it. After a bout with bronchites in Dec 2009 in Jan 2010 several nodes show up in rt shoulder. Another removal this time 3 positive reports for Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma. Sent to spec. at Seattle Care Alliance They say they can't believe I have it I should be dead or very very ill. Extreme tiredness extreme pain in neck and shoulder, pressure in chest area, Headaches, weakness in left arm, They are still baffled so now the other nodes are shrinking but new ones have appeared 1 on the other side of the neck the other in my groin area. Lots of itchyness in areas that have enlarged nodes. - cat4christ

I had no symptoms at all, except for a bump on the top of my head that kept growing. I decided to have it surgically removed, thinking it was a sebaceous cyst or even a hematoma. When I awoke from the surgery I learned that not only had I had a serious reaction to the Ancef (antiobiotic) that they gave me preoperatively and if I had not been intubated I may not have survived, but also that I had a "tumor" and not a cyst. I got the results on March 19th in the morning and I was stunned. - kimg

Sudden itching and spreading pain in my left leg moving to my right arm within 12 hrs, then to my right leg, converting to extreme pain. Unable to sleep for over 36 hrs. Dr. expected brain involvement, ordered MRI. No indications of disease. Prescribed gabapentin, was like a miracle. I think because I could sleep. Symptoms abated for some time then returned.
I went back to my PCP who had been on this the whole time. He sent me to a neurologist (who was awful) that ran a bunch of torture tests. He then sent me for an MRI of my neck.
This is perhaps the best part of the story. When I met with him about the results he coldly said this is not neurological. Nothing else!
I had an appointment with my PCP about two weeks later. Upon reading the report he said you have a large nodule on your thyroid (WTF). What a crappy doctor that neurologist was! Didn't say a thing or send a report to my PCP...
My PCP went into high gear and ordered an Ultrasound, followed by a biopsy.
Bad Findings, consult, and surgery.
Great Surgeon, Dr. Glackin. Kind, Listens, Patient, Tender.
Both Dr's PCP Levin and Surgeon Dr. Glackin visited and made sure orders were followed and I was comfortable after surgery and the next day. I thought that only happened on TV. - curlygirlshusband
